Gransden Lodge Airfield

RAF Gransden Lodge opened in April 1942 as an operational RAF Bomber Command station. A typical wartime station, well dispersed and unusually set away from roads and amidst fields, it had the customary three runways, one of 2,000yards and two of 1,400yards. There were two 'T2' hangars and a 'B1', along with 36 hard standings.

At the end of 1945 the airfield was transferred to Transport Command but the last operational squadron was disbanded in February 1946. The RAF station closed in 1955 and it was also used for some motor races, including the 1st post-war motor race in the UK on the 13th July 1947.  It is now home to Cambridge Gliding Club.
